Izamal, also called "the yellow town",  started as an  major MAYAN settlement with rich history from Mayan culture.  Later it became an important point for the conquistadors with strong Spanish and  Catholic influence. This area is very famous for it´s old Sisal Haciendas surrounding the town. 
It is a short drive on good roads to visit the world famous Mayan sites of Chichen Itza, Uxmal, Kabah and many more.
The white city of Merida is only 45 minutes away by car.

Visiting the coast of Yucatan takes as little as 50 minutes to be right at the ocean. Visit the  beautiful ecological reserve, cruise the lagoons by boat and  catch sight of crocodiles, Flamingos as well other  species of birds  and  more exotic animals. Remember to bring your camera !
